As a writer I used to be best known for my historical fiction and non-fiction books about Orkney’s famous Italian chapel, built by Italian POWs during WW2. However, the publication in 2023 and subsequent success of The Last Witch of Scotland, changed all of that. In November 2024 Waterstones announced that the title was its ‘Scottish Book of the Year’. I’ve also written contemporary novels, including one on domestic abuse and another about residents in a Highland care home, but as the years roll by I’m increasingly drawn back into history (my latest novel, A Fire in Their Hearts, is set in the 17th century).
